“Once Upon a Mattress” is the “true” version of the folktale “The Princess and the Pea.” Young Prince Dauntless the Drab wants to be married, but his mother, Queen Aggravain, doesn't want to let him go. Not only that, but no one else in the kingdom can get married until the prince does. Meanwhile, the King is mute because of a spell which states he will not speak “until the mouse devours the hawk.” All seems lost until Sir Harry goes to the swamps to find Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, who swims the moat and announces her arrival in song. Written by Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer, the original Broadway cast starred an unknown Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred.

The cast consists of thirty-six children in grades 3-8, from Framingham, Natick, Medway and Needham (see list, below). They have been working hard to learn the dances, songs, and scenes for this delightful family show. “They’re a terrific cast,” says PAC drama director Betty Lehrman. “They have picked up everything so fast, we’ve been able to give them more and more details about their characters, the dances and the songs.”

Kathrine Waters, a private vocal coach and member of the faculty at Algonquin High School, serves as Music Director for the show, and Colleen Biron, a Boston Conservatory-trained dancer, handles the choreography. The live pit band will be led by PAC Music Coordinator, pianist Joshua Del Dotto. Alison Schwartz, a junior at the Cambridge School of Weston, is assistant director, and a host of parents is involved in building and painting the sets and designing the costumes – truly a community effort.
